News From the Road - Day Three - Skipton to Keswick

Just as you think that nothing can get any better, life suddenly surprises you. I was expecting a fairly leisurely day today, from Skipton to the Lake District, but it wasn’t to be. We called in on a coach company called Bibbys in Ingleton who had contacted us on Monday to invite us to visit on our way past. They had an identical Bedford OB coach so shared our passion. The owner, Peter Bibby was a fabulous host and we lined the two coaches up, side-by-side. They were about as identical as you could get, apart from the colour. Even the upholstery was identical.

I was very touched when shortly after our arrival, a team of staff from Bibbys set to and polished our coach, for no other reason than they wanted to! It demonstrated not only their shared interest in old vehicles, but also true Yorkshire hospitality! Peter then announced that the Flying Scotsman was due to pass close by, and asked if we would like to see it. We of course said yes, and took both buses and some of the staff of Bibbys cross country, to a remote track, near the railway line, to view the Flying Scotsman passing. What a treat and what a photo opportunity!

I was expecting this trip to be interesting and enjoyable, but didn’t expect it to be so emotional. I’ve been touched by the reaction we have received from all the people we have met and the smiles our adventure has solicited. We reckon the coach does at least  five smiles per mile! It may just be nostalgia, but I think it is also a small touch of magic in an otherwise rather depressing world.
